New or Returning to Tap?
We understand that starting dance classes as an adult can be daunting, especially when you’re joining a class of students who have already been learning for weeks. To help overcome this, we run a 6-week Tap BASICS course tailored specifically for adults with little to no dance experience. You can join our Tap BASICS courses comforted by the knowledge that others in the class are also novice dancers like you.
The BASICS courses are designed to break things down to the bare basics, starting with concepts like posture, the names of the different positions, and how the steps relate to each other. Each course is a complete 6-week term, consisting of one 75-minute class per week.
Each class builds on lessons from the class before it (hence why term enrolment is required), progressively teaching you the core fundamentals of Tap dancing. Casual attendance is not permitted in this class, as attending class sporadically will not enable students to develop the skills needed to progress and enjoy our Beginner or Elementary Tap class.
After completing a BASICS course, you’ll have the skills to join an Absolute Beginners Tap Class, or a Standard Beginners/Elementary Tap Class. You can do the BASICS course as many times as you like, until you feel confident enough to progress to another level. We advise you speak to your teacher regularly to check on your progress and see when you’ll be ready to move up. Please remember that everyone learns differently and at a different pace. It’s important not to compare yourself to others. Aim to be patient with yourself, and trust in the process.

Ashanti is the Director of The Dance Workshop. She began her dance training in Perth in Jazz, Tap, Ballet and Flamenco. At the age of 18 Ashanti completed her Commonwealth Society Teachers of Dance Theatrical Student Teachers Diploma, and later completed the Spanish Dance Institute Teaching certificate.
Loved the class. Just the right balance of the familiar and challenges, the straight forward and intricacies. Leanne must be the most passionate tap teacher in town. Actually, she most definitely is. Her passion is infectious, her skills enviable, glorious and her friendly teaching style is tops. Glad to be back at the DWS.

Like to make some noise? This is the class for you!
Tap is a form of dance characterized by the tapping sound created by metal plates attached to both the ball and heel of the dancer’s shoe. Think of tap shoes like instruments. The tap dancer is a musician, creating tapping sounds to compliment the music.
Made famous by legends like the Nicholas Brothers, Savion Glover, and shows like the Tap Dogs and Happy Feet, tap dancing is a timeless dance style that can be enjoyed by anyone of any age. Some of our students started tap dancing as young as 70 years old, and have reaped rewards like improving balance, memory, fitness and, as they put it, “groove”. It’s never too late to start tap dancing.
