What makes our dance classes different from other “Adult Dance Classes” in Perth?
Dance classes for adults are becoming very popular. Recent published research and documentaries espousing the physical, neurological, mental and social benefits of dance have created a movement of adults seeking dance classes.
Adult dance classes are becoming more and more common and are popping up everywhere from gyms to your children’s dance studio—but not all of them are created equal. Here’s the breakdown.
The Problem with the “adults dance class” at your child’s dance studio
You’re chatting with your friends and say how much you loved dance as a child and you wish you could dance again. Your friends say, “my child’s dance school has an adult class you should come, so many of the other parents do”.
Traditional dance schools like these primarily cater to children, developing their technique, musicality, and performance skills gradually. They offer exams, competitions, and performance opportunities over the years. Adult classes are often added just to fill studio time or encourage further investment by existing families. These classes tend to:
- Group all adult students together regardless of skill level, meaning complete beginners may be in the same class with more experienced dancers, leaving no room for structured progression.
- Cater primarily to dance parents of the children in the school. This often creates an environment where social dynamics from the kids’ classes spill over, and even sometimes the politics of the studio.
If you’re not part of the “dance mum” clique, you might feel like an outsider. - Teaching methods may lack focus on progress and intention. These classes are often treated as casual sessions rather than opportunities for development. A relaxed dance class can be appropriate if that is the desired outcome.
However, for those seeking to learn, improve, and be challenged in a supportive environment, it is essential to find a studio that understands and caters exclusively to adult dancers. While the relaxed social aspect can be found in all adult recreational classes, the emphasis on progress is unique to studios with class formats specifically designed for adult learners.
General adult classes integrated into schedules primarily aimed at children may not provide this level of focus. Additionally, these classes are sometimes subject to cancellation, shortening, or relocation when child-focused priorities such as exams or competitions arise.
Adult Only Dance Studios
Being an exclusively adult only dance studio, this is where the Dance Workshop is different. All our classes are adult classes. Everything from our timetable, fee structure and class structure is designed with working adults in mind.
This is exactly what sets us apart from the “adult dance class” at your child’s studio. We pride ourselves on:
1. Structured for Progression
We don’t treat all adult students as a monolith with one skill level. Whether you are brand new to dance or returning after years away, we offer different levels so you can train at the right pace—without feeling lost or held back or holding others back.
2. A Welcoming, Clique-Free, Politics-Free Environment
Our classes are specifically designed for adults, free from the typical dynamics found in children’s dance studios. The environment is not influenced by politics or hierarchy common in traditional dance schools.
Participation is based on a genuine interest in learning rather than a desire to gain proximity to instructors. There are no “star” groups or students nor any favoritism among teachers. The class structure and culture remain unaffected by any internal politics or exclusive groups.
These classes provide a space where adults can concentrate on their dance practice and progress under the guidance of dedicated teachers.
3. Respect for Adult Schedules & Commitments
We get it—life is busy. Our classes are structured to be flexible, with options for different intensities and schedules so you can keep dancing without sacrificing other responsibilities.
We don’t align with the schooling timetable, so we don’t close for the school holidays as all the other studios do, and with the exception of certain short courses, students can attend casually as many or as few times as they like.
Day time classes, evening classes and weekend classes allow students to take dance class around shift work schedules and even FIFO work schedules.
4. Teachers Who Understand How Adults Learn
Adults absorb information differently than kids. Our instructors tailor their teaching to suit mature learners, ensuring you build confidence, technique, and artistry in a way that works for you. Each teacher is different and engages different pedagogy.
With various teachers in various dance styles, you can find the right teacher that is the right fit for you.
Find the Right Fit for You
Dance classes, like people, have their own personalities. If you’ve tried adult classes elsewhere and felt out of place, unchallenged, or just another body in the room—it’s not you, it’s the environment.
Adult students deserve the same attention, structure, and respect as any other dancer. Whether you’re starting fresh, reigniting an old passion, or looking for a studio that takes you seriously, we’re here to help you grow.
