Jazz Classes

Unique moves from the traditional and modern-funk eras of Jazz

We understand that starting dance classes as an adult can be daunting, especially when you’re joining a class of students who have already been learning for weeks. To help overcome this, we run a 6-week Jazz BASICS course tailored specifically for adults with little to no dance experience. You can join our Jazz BASICS courses comforted by the knowledge that others in the class are also novice dancers like you.

The BASICS courses are designed to break things down to the bare basics, starting with concepts like posture, the names of the different positions, and how the steps relate to each other. Each course is a complete 6-week term, consisting of one 75-minute class per week.

Each class builds on lessons from the class before it (hence why term enrolment is required), progressively teaching you the core fundamentals of Jazz dancing. Casual attendance is not permitted in this class, as attending class sporadically will not enable students to develop the skills needed to progress and enjoy our Beginner or Elementary Jazz class.

After completing a BASICS course, you’ll have the skills to join an Absolute Beginners Jazz Class, or a Standard Beginners/Elementary Jazz Class. You can do the BASICS course as many times as you like, until you feel confident enough to progress to another level. We advise you speak to your teacher regularly to check on your progress and see when you’ll be ready to move up. Please remember that everyone learns differently and at a different pace. It’s important not to compare yourself to others. Aim to be patient with yourself, and trust in the process.

The over 50’s Jazz class is so uplifting. A range of dance moves and styles are taught, so you never get bored. In the class Ashanti gives a lot of attention to technique and the ‘feel’ of the music. It is a non judgemental space, with an amazing group of women and a lot of fun as well !

Commercial Jazz

Commercial jazz is a dynamic dance style that seamlessly blends the structure of jazz with the raw energy of hip hop.

It’s the driving force behind the captivating visuals of music videos, commercials, and television shows. Characterized by its upbeat tempo and flashy movements, commercial jazz demands strong performance quality and versatility.

This style incorporates the infectious rhythms of pop, R&B, and electronic music, creating a high-energy and visually striking performance.

Fab After 50s

Our highly popular Fab After 50s jazz class is designed specifically for dancers over 50 who already have dance experience and a basic knowledge of dance.

We promise no fast turns, jumps, leaps, high kicks or floor work. But that doesn’t mean we slow it down or “dumb” it down.

This is a class for dancers at the mature stages of physical movement. You love to dance, but need to moderate the physical demands of energetic moves. You are also definitely beyond the mind-numbing nature of Zumba and need a new challenge!

Jazz

Jazz is a varied dance style consisting of unique moves from specific eras of jazz. Predominantly, Jazz includes learning and using techniques from classical training such as pirouettes and turns, kicks and jumps. Our classes include a mix of traditional jazz through to the modern-commercial styles of today.

Jazz is a fun and technical dance style that relies heavily on the teacher’s individual style, originality and improvisation, as jazz dancers incorporate different styles into their own expression of the dance. Jazz dancing often uses bold, dramatic body movements, including body isolations and contractions.

Jazz combines traditional jazz dance exercises such as leaps, turns, runs and kicks with current music. We have classes suitable for absolute beginners through to advanced level students.

We offer various streams of Jazz including, Broadway Jazz, Commercial Jazz, “Sexy Street” Jazz, and Lyrical Jazz. As well as your traditional Jazz Dance Class. The main differences between all of them are the music and the stylistic expression of the individual teacher. If you are new to dance, we highly suggest starting in our Dance BASICS Course to learn the foundations and technique of Jazz dance. After completing a term or so of Dance BASICS you will find that you will have the confidence and understanding of the basic technique needed to participate in other Jazz styles.

Theatre Jazz

Theatre Jazz, also commonly called Broadway Jazz, is a jazz dance class with a focus on musical theatre. Songs used in our Theatre Jazz classes come from well-known musical theatre shows, with original choreography influenced by the themes and story of that show.

These classes tend to have a strong focus on performance and delivery. It’s a must for amateur performers and musical theatre lovers who have to just get up and dance to their favourite show tunes.

Singing is always optional, but never frowned upon!
